Structural Glazing on the grounds of the London Eye says more about us as a company, than the actual  job in hand.  

The job that was in hand was very simple: Over Head Canopy, lifting 70kg of glass above our heads, and leaving it their for another 20 year trusting to never fall out!

Working on an area like this, obviously has its limitations on when a job this big can be carried out, and how we can proceed with works to make sure of absolute safety of all public and ourselves.

With the amount of footfall an area like this has, working during the day hours is simply not plausible, and so has to be to carried out during the night hours.

The Famous Luton Hoo Royalty Owned House

On The Grounds Of The Luton Hoo Hotel 

NW Door and Window Repairs took this sash window refurbishment job for RJ O'Neil Property Services.

We had the pleasure of meeting the owner of the hotel, who was moving into the house.

The house was abandoned on the grounds for some years, and the windows were in a bad condition all over.

After removing the sliding sashes, and stripping them of paint deglazing, we then went to work for the next 6 weeks refurbishing the frames and routing the sashes out.

This was to get them ready to accept the new Energy Efficient Double Glazed Units with full draft proofing.

This was a full scale project!  

Once all the repair work was done, all that was left was to spray paint the refurbished timber, fitting sash cords, and complete draft proofing.

By doing this, all of the period windows were kept, but increasing the thermal value up to todays standards.

 How to solve a leaking conservatory   

After a few years of your conservatory being built, you may find small droplets or water runs dripping of the frame.

Over the years, you may have noticed the water is collecting more and more each time it rains.

The problems with this is with water .

Although you may stop the water coming in from one place, it doesn't necessarily mean the leak has been stopped.

This is because water will always come in at its lowest and most convenient place. 

So although the leak has been cured in place as water level builds up, their will be a next low point where the water will come in again.

This will leave you with nasty patch work all over the roof where different points are being sealed up, without giving a thought to the cause of the leak.

Water will always come in from so many different points, even while you keep stopping small leaks in different places. 

The leaks most of the time, are due to debris and dirt carried over by the wind and weather.

Over years of the conservatory standing, all of this dirt and debris will collect under the rubber seals and gaskets, meaning the gaskets will perish.

The debris will start blocking up the drainage points, stopping the water from draining correctly or quick enough, causing the water to back track and find its way in.

We all know how much damage standing water will make! 

The solution to fixing a leaking conservatory is actually quite simple!

Clean it well! 

That makes it sound simple, but it as simple as cleaning it! 

Unfortunately though, it doesn't mean surface cleaning, but a detailing clean.

You will need to remove all of the roof panels, clean everything and add new grease to the gaskets (or replace depending on how bad they have perished).

You then need to clean out and unblock all the drainage points and fit the roof back together.

Can You Paint UPVC Window Frames?

Can You Paint UPVC Window Frames?

The simple and quick answer is - YES, you can paint UPVC Window Frames! But there is a special technique involved if you want them to look good!

You can buy paint from a DIY store and do this yourself, but you will need to know what you are doing. You will also need to purchase the following items to make sure that you will get a good finish:

1. UPVC Cleaner
2. UPVC Primer
3. UPVC Paint

UPVC Cleaner

Before you can start to think about painting your UPVC Window Frames, you will first need to ensure they are clean, and free of any dirt. There are several UPVC Cleaners on the market today which will do the job for you, but it will always be best to go with a slightly more industrial strength cleaner, as this will give you a better result.

UPVC Primer

Unlike painting a "normal" surface, you will need to have a UPVC Primer put on to the window frame before you put on the colour of your choice. The UPVC Paint will need something to adhere to, otherwise when it rains - the paint will simply wash away.

UPVC Paint

Once you have done the cleaning of the window frame, and have put your base coat (primer) down, you will then be ready to apply the UPVC Paint. This simply goes on top of the base coat, and will adhere to the window frame.

How to Fit a Letterbox

How to fit a letterbox

So you want to know how to fit a letterbox? Then you have come to the right place! NW Window Repairs will show you how to install a letterbox using simple measurements.

How to fit a letterbox : Method 1 – Measure the outside of your existing letterbox

This is the most simple method of checking you are purchasing the correct sized letterbox.

There are 3 sizes of letterboxes available on the market. These are:

1    1)      10" UPVC Letterbox (265mm x 70mm)

2    2)      12" UPVC Letterbox (305mm x 70mm)

3    3)      12” Slimline UPVC Letterbox (317mm x 50mm)

Usually, buying the same size as you have previously had will be sufficient. However, if you want to make 100% sure you have the correct sized letterbox, or if you want to know how to install a letterbox from scratch, then please look at method #2 below.

How to install a letterbox : Method 2 – Inside measurements

The internal measurement of the letterbox, will always determine what size you require. So if you have got the hole cut out already without a letterbox in, or if you require a hole to be cut out to install a letterbox, then you will need the following measurements:

1    1)      To use a 10” letterbox, the hole will need to be 215mm to 245mm in width, and 37mm to 55mm in height.

2    2)      To use a 12” letterbox, the hole will need to be 250mm to 290mm in width, and 37mm to 55mm in height.

3    3)      To use a 12” Slimline letterbox, the hole will need to be 260mm to 280mm in width, and 30mm to 40mm in height.

Each letterbox comes with telescopic sleeves, which allows for the thickness of the door itself.

Letterboxes which are fitted through moulded panels are between 20mm to 40mm in size.
Letterboxes which are fitted through the frame, are between 40mm to 80mm in size.

Now you know the size required, how do you actually FIT your letterbox?! These 4 simple steps will show you from start to finish:

How to fit a letterbox

Step 1 – Remove your old letterbox if you have one. (If you don’t already have a letterbox hole, then you will need to use the measurements above to cut the correct size required.)

Step 2 – Place the back panel on to the inside of the door. This should easily fit in to the hole.

Step 3 – Place the screws in to the holes. (If you require the holes to be drilled, use a pencil to mark where the screws are, and drill out)

Step 4 – The tricky bit! Reach around your door whilst still holding the back panel in place, and push the front panel in to place. There are 2 holes to receive the screws. (You may need someone to help you with this!)

Note: Sometimes you may find that the screws are slightly too long, especially if you have a thinner than average door.

And that is it! 4 simple steps on how to install a letterbox!

How to Measure UPVC Door Handles

Knowing how to measure a UPVC Door Handle is essential if you require a replacement for your existing one.

There are several different sized door handles on the market today, and it is not a simple “choose the Door Handle design you like the best” method – unfortunately!

So how DO you measure UPVC Door Handles?

Well it is pretty straight forward as explained below:

Question: - Is the Top Screw above or below the UPVC Door Handle?

If the top screw is below the door handle, then it is really simple – Top Screw handles are all very much the same dimensions!

If the top screw is above the door handle, then you really still need to know how to measure your UPVC Door Handle correctly.

How to measure your UPVC Door Handle

There are 3 measurements you require, A, B, and C as shown in the diagram below:

• ·         Measurement A (also known as the PZ measurement), is taken from you center of the handle, to the center of the lock.
• ·         Measurement B is the distance from the Top Screw, to the Bottom Screw.
• ·         Measurement C isn’t the most vital measurement, as it is simply the length of the handle. However, if you wish to cover the area of your old UPVC Door Handle, then you will need this!

Next, you need to identify if you need a Lever Lever, or a Lever Pad Door Handle.

·         Note: The PAD design is the shorter handle, and is usually found on the outside door to help with security. (See Image at top of page)

Condensation On Windows

Are you battling with Condensation on Windows?

Many people think the only way to stop the condensation on windows building up, is to replace your existing window with a new one. THIS IS NOT TRUE. In fact, if you DO replace your window, and go for a cheaper glazing option to help save money, your new window will only be rated from a C for energy saving. This will mean condensation will still occur.

What is Condensation on Windows?

Condensation on windows is a mix of warm air escaping through the double glazed unit, and mixing with the cold air from outside. This will then penetrate in to the glass unit, and mix to create the condensation inside the window.

So how do you deal with Condensation on Windows?

There are a few ways to deal with the condensation build up on your windows. These are listed below:

Option 1: Put some air flow trickle vents in to the window.

This will give air flow to the room, and cool the air around the window. It will cool your room down, and fight about 60% to 70% of your moisture problem.

Option 2: The best solution.

This is the most cost-effective solution, and will save you money on your heating bills, as well as up to 70% of your room temperature.
Remove all the existing glass, and replace with A+ Rated, Low Energy Opti White Glass, with a Warm Edge Spacer Bar, filled with Argon Gas.
This solution will let the window condensate, but only from the exterior part of your window. It essentially reverses the condensation from being on the inside, to the outside. The added benefits of this, is that you will have an A+ Rated window on energy efficiency at a much cheaper cost than replacing your window frames.

Option 3: Replace the Window

This should be the last option you go for, as this is the most expensive. You simple throw out your old window, and replace with new. However, if you go for this option, you must make sure you as for the Low.E Opti White Glass, or your window will simply condensate again – meaning you have simply thrown your money away and not achieved anything!

NW Window Repairs understand that people think the only solution is to replace their windows, but this is not the case. It isn’t about getting rid of the old window frame and problem solved! It is about ensuring you have the best glass fitted to suit your needs.

Remember: Over 80% of a window or door is glass. If you change the glass to fix the problem, the problem is solved. The frames themselves have no energy efficiency to them unless the substrate is wood, as this will naturally retain the heat.

UPVC is a hollow section, meaning there is an air cavity. Aluminium is thermally broken with a UPVC Strip to stop the cold penetrating through. Thermally broken does not mean energy efficient.

So if you want to go with option 3 and spend a lot of money getting your windows replaced, please remember to ask for A+ Rated glass.

Shop Front Respray

SHOP FRONT RESPRAY

A little while ago, we had a call from one of our clients who wanted a shop front respray. The original quotation they had to refit the shop front was not budgeted for, so they contacted us at NW Door and Window Repairs. We arrived at the building, and priced up the job for them - and undercut the original quote they had been given.

As this was a commercial property which had other contractors doing their work, we arranged a suitable time and date for our work to start. We had to take in to account the footfall around the shop, and decided that the safest time would be out of our usual working hours due to Health and Safety reasons.

We liaised with our client as to the colour of the sign which was going above the shop front, and colour matched using our RAL colour chart, getting the exact shade required. This colour was also used throughout the inside of the shop, to tie the whole brand together.

Inside the Shop Before Respray

We made sure everything was protected before the shop front respray commenced, and made sure all of the interior work was also protected from any over-spray.

Once the job was completed, the shop front shutters were checked, to ensure that they still operated in the correct manor, and would not damage the paintwork in any way.

 An Example of Solutions Strategy

 One example of our solutions strategy is where we attended a job that had newly fitted window and doors, but then didn't pass any of the Fire Regulations. This was down to them being made from an architects drawing without much thought of where these windows would be situated, and spec not being put down before ordering. We were told by the contractors that we have come across your website, and after speaking to dozens of other repair companies, we don’t think anything can be done and can’t even find someone that will attend to even look at the job. They said they were about to re-order all of the windows that didn't pass the regulations.

This window did not pass the fire regulations due to center mullion

We attended this job and looked around, where we stated that we can do something with this. We spent around 30 minutes of our time to give a quick sample - not a full finished job, but enough to show the contractor what we were proposing to do. We waited 3 days for the fire regulations man to say yes or no, when we were then given the go ahead to redesign 47 windows on site to pass the regulations. 

Center Mullion has now been removed from its fixed point, and now opens with the left hand opener, giving enough clearance for a person to jump out of in case of fire

This is a smaller window which has the same issues. This is what all the windows looked like when shut.
